  • Dr. Chika Unigwe awarded a Faculty Research Grant from the Provost for Summer 2022!
     
  • Dr. Chika Unigwe - Canongate has acquired The Middle Daughter, Chika Unigwe’s reimagining of the Greek myth of Persephone and Hades, centring a woman’s experience of living in a patriarchal society. Canongate will publish the novel in April 2023 simultaneously with Dzanc Books in the US.   • Dr. Chika Unigwe's book On Black Sisters Street has just been released in Tamil (India).  
     
  • Dr. Mary Magoulick's recently published book, The Goddess Myth, received a positive review and won an honorable mention for the professional prize from the Women’s Section of the American Folklore Society at her annual meeting. The press (UPM), who had a book table at the conference, stated that it was the first book sold and the most often picked up book during the conference.
     
  • Dr. Mary Magoulick  interviewed recently about the The Goddess Myth for New Books Network – you can find the podcast here.
  • Dr. Bruce Gentry and Dr. Robert Donahoo of Sam Houston State University will serve as Co-Directors with assistance from the Andalusia Institute to host an NEH funded Summer Institute, “Re-Considering Flannery O’Connor” in Summer of 2023. For four weeks in June of 2023, we will host 25 teacher/scholars and numerous visiting scholars to learn about teaching and scholarship on Flannery O’Connor at the place where she wrote many of her works. NEH has provided $235,000 to enable this opportunity.
     
  • Professor Peter Selgin Regal House will publish, A Boy's Guide to Outer Space, in the Fall of 2024.   
    • A Boy’s Guide to Outer Space is about the places on earth where the mundane and the miraculous meet, and of a boy’s re-discovery of his sense of wonder.
    • “A Boy’s Guide to Outer Space is reminiscent of Alain Fournier’s 1913 classic, Le Grand Meaulnes (voted the most popular novel in France): a novel about Paradise Lost, the paradise of childhood, ‘the only true Holy Land.’ This is a novel for readers who love the drama of mysterious worlds and the spell of enchanting words.” — Alta Ifland, author of The Wife Who Wasn’t
    • GCSU's Department of Art will be sponsoring a retrospective exhibit of Peter Selgin's art. The exhibit, to be held in the Underwood Gallery from January 12, 2023 - February 23, 2023, will feature 40 works from the 1980s through the present, and will include original paintings, watercolors, pen and ink drawings, illustrations, book cover designs, as well as fine-art prints. A reception (featuring David Johnson on violin) will be held on Thursday, January 19 at 5:00.
       
  • Dr. Sidonia Serafini recently received an Award for Excellence in Student Archives-Centered Work in a Public Institution from the Georgia Historical Records Advisory Council for her participation in the digital symposium, "Digital Clinton: Slavery and Freedom in Middle Georgia and Reflections on Our Mutual Past." With Professor Barbara McCaskill of the University of Georgia, she will present a virtual invited talk, titled “Radical Empathy and the Liberatory Writings of Rev. Peter Thomas Stanford,” at the Centre for Baptist Studies at Regent’s Park College, Oxford, England on November 4.
     
  • Dr. Joy Bracewell, Dr. Katie Simon, Dr. Kerry Neville, and Dr. Stefanie Sevcik  accepted to the Women’s Leadership Faculty Fellows program!

  • Arts and Sciences College Excellence Award winners for 2022-23:
    • Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Endeavors:  Dr. Mary Magoulick, Department of English  
    • Excellence in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning:  Dr. Jennifer Flaherty, Department of English
       
  • Dr. Jennifer Flaherty recently published an article entitled, "All is Mended? Activism and Eco-Anxiety in Bright Summer Night," in The Shakespeare Bulletin.  In addition, she was invited to speak at the Women’s Center for the SheSpeaks event in March.
     
  • Professor Laura Newbern, is a winner of the 2023 Changes Book Prize in poetry. Her second collection of poems, A Night in the Country, has been selected by 2020 Nobel Laureate in Literature Louise Glück as one of the winners of this prize and will be published in Spring 2024. In addition to publication, Professor Newbern receives a $10,000 award. Her previous book, Love and the Eye, was selected by Claudia Rankine for the Kore Press First Book Award in 2010. Professor Newbern is an Associate Professor of English at GCSU.
